Understanding your ovulation is one of the key steps in optimizing your fertility journey. However, with so many ovulation predictor kits (OPKs) on the market, how do you know which one is right for you? If you’ve ever found yourself overwhelmed by options or wondering if you really need to track ovulation at all, you’re not alone. One of the most common questions I get from my clients is: “What type of OPK should I be using?”

The truth is, the best ovulation test is the one that fits your personality type—whether you’re a data-driven planner, someone who prefers a straightforward, hands-off approach, or a tech-lover who enjoys smart gadgets. Let’s break down your best options.

What If You Don’t Want to Track Ovulation?

If tracking ovulation seems like too much, I recommend having timed intercourse every other day between cycle days 10 and 20. While this method doesn’t guarantee you’re hitting your most fertile days, it can be a good baseline. However, tracking ovulation is often the best route for better accuracy and more confidence.

Another simple trick? Start having timed intercourse as soon as you notice cervical mucus. It’s one of your body’s natural fertility signs and a great indicator that you’re entering your fertile window.

Picking the Right Ovulation Test for Your Personality

Now, let’s talk about OPKs. Choosing the right method depends on your personal preferences and how much detail you want in your tracking.

  1. For the Data-Loving Maven: LH Test Strips

If you love information and want to see real-time changes, a bulk pack of LH test strips (like the ones on Amazon) might be perfect for you.

  • They allow you to track your LH surge progression over time.
  • Test twice a day—using your second urine of the day and again in the afternoon.
  • This method gives you a clear picture of your ovulatory pattern without relying on predictions.

These tests are cost-effective, but interpreting the lines can take some getting used to.

  1. For the No-Fuss Tracker: Digital OPKs

If the idea of deciphering faint test lines makes you cringe, go for a digital OPK like Clearblue Easy.

  • These tests show clear “high” and “peak” fertility indicators—no guessing required.
  • They’re easy to use and great for those who want some guidance but don’t want to dive into hardcore data tracking.

I often recommend these to clients who want a simple, stress-free tracking experience.

  1. For the Tech-Savvy Woman: Wearable Fertility Trackers

If you love technology and gadgets, you might prefer a wearable fertility monitor that tracks temperature, pulse rate, and sleep cycles.

  • Devices like the Ava bracelet or Oura Ring can passively collect data while you sleep.
  • These are great for a hands-off approach without needing to pee on a stick every day.

However, be mindful that wearable devices estimate ovulation based on physiological changes, so they may not always provide real-time accuracy.

What About Fertility Apps?

I don’t love relying solely on fertility apps. Most use an algorithm that assumes a 14-day luteal phase, counting backward from your last period to predict ovulation.

The problem? Not everyone has a 14-day luteal phase.

  • Some women have a 7-day luteal phase, others have 9 or 10 days—meaning an app could completely miss your ovulation window.
  • If you’ve been using an app to track ovulation and haven’t had success, this could be why.

Apps can be useful for logging data, but they shouldn’t be your only method of tracking ovulation.

What About Basal Body Temperature (BBT) Charting?

BBT tracking forces you to think about your fertility first thing in the morning, which isn’t ideal for stress levels.

  • Waking up in the middle of the night or stressing about taking your temperature can spike cortisol and adrenaline, which isn’t helpful for conception.
  • It requires months of consistent tracking to establish a pattern.

I prefer real-time ovulation tracking rather than waiting to see trends over multiple cycles—because, let’s be honest, you just wanted to be pregnant yesterday.

Finding the Right Fit for You

The best ovulation test is the one that works for you. Whether you love data, need an easy solution, or prefer wearable tech, understanding your body’s signals will help take the guesswork out of conception.
