I get asked all the time: What prenatal vitamin should I be taking? If you’re on your fertility journey, you’ve probably felt overwhelmed by the endless options out there. I know how important it is to choose the right one because not all prenatals are created equal.
Here’s something most people don’t realize—there is one prenatal on the market right now that looks amazing. The packaging? Gorgeous. The nutrients listed on the label? Stunning. But when you take a closer look at the ingredients? It falls very, very short of what your body needs when you’re trying to conceive.
How to Tell if Your Prenatal Is Actually Doing Its Job
If your prenatal comes in just one or two capsules or tablets, I hate to break it to you, but you are not getting everything you need.
Your body requires a comprehensive suite of vitamins to support fertility. And the truth is, that can’t fit into just one or two small pills.
So what’s missing?
- Enough EPA and DHA (Fish Oil) for Fertility Support
One of the biggest gaps I see in most prenatals is that the EPA and DHA levels—critical omega-3 fatty acids—are nowhere near the amount that moves the needle for fertility.
Your total EPA and DHA need to be at least 1,200 milligrams.
Why? Because these healthy fats:
- Help reduce inflammation in your uterine lining (key for implantation)
- Provide the building blocks for estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone
- Support overall reproductive health by giving your body the fat it needs for hormone production
If your prenatal doesn’t provide 1,200 mg or more, you’ll need to take an additional high-quality fish oil supplement.
- Essential Minerals Like Zinc
Many prenatals are also deficient in key minerals, especially zinc, which is critical for fertility. Zinc helps with:
- Cell division (essential for healthy egg development)
- Reducing autoimmune factors that could be impacting implantation
Without enough zinc, your body might struggle to create the optimal environment for conception.
- Whole Food-Based, Not Synthetic
Another issue? Many prenatals use synthetic vitamins, which are hard on your body and not as easily absorbed.
I always recommend choosing a prenatal made from clean, whole-food sources to ensure optimal nutrient intake without putting unnecessary stress on your system.
What Should Your Prenatal Vitamin Routine Look Like?
At the absolute minimum, you need to be taking:
✔️ A high-quality prenatal vitamin
✔️ A mineral supplement (with plenty of zinc)
✔️ Fish oil providing at least 1,200 mg of EPA and DHA
This is the bare minimum for supporting your fertility.
If your current prenatal lacks these essentials, it’s time to reevaluate. Remember, your fertility journey deserves real support, not just a pretty label. Take a close look at your vitamins and make sure they’re giving you exactly what you need.
