Do you ever wonder how Janet Jackson became pregnant at the age of 50? Or how Cameron Diaz became a second time mom at the age of 51? Naomi Campbell also looked ravishing in a maternity dress at the age of 53. How are they pregnant when many of us struggle to get pregnant over the age of 40, even with IVF? What gives?
The Reality Behind the Glitz
Many of us admire celebrities and, without realizing it, we compare our situations to theirs.
While I have no insider knowledge as to exactly how Miss Jackson became pregnant at the age of 50, I can assure you, after coaching thousands of women through the IVf process, Janet did not suddenly miss a period and pee on a stick to find out her good news. Fertility treatments like IVF can help assist women getting pregnant after the age of 40, 45 and even 50. Many of these celebs are probably using IVF, donor egg, donor sperm , or even donor embryo. It is not any of our business on “the how” they got pregnant. But I want to caution you on comparing yourself to them. I’m sure that unbeknownst to us, it took them many, many tries. We only witness the wonderful news of a baby coming.
Managing Your Fertility Journey
If you are considering or currently undergoing IVF, and you find yourself comparing your “unsuccessful” journey with the successful one of an older celebrity in the news, here are a few strategies that might help:
- Set Realistic Expectations: Recognize that IVF is a process that can vary greatly and is filled with highs and lows. Remember – it only takes one – one good embryo – to have a healthy pregnancy. Even if you only have 2 or 3 follicles retrieved during your IVF cycle, I’m sure that the exact same thing happened to your favorite pregnant celebrity over the age of 40.
- Focus on Self-Care: Taking care of both your physical and emotional health is crucial. Maintain a routine that includes exercise, a nutritious diet, and sufficient rest, and allow yourself to process and express your emotions. Sometimes staying away from celebrity pregnancy news is just the thing that you need to maintain your sanity during such a tough time.
- Build a Support Network: Connecting with others facing similar challenges can be comforting. Find a friend or two going through IVF. But be careful of IVF support groups or IVF online discussions. They can quickly turn into “leaderboards”. I have found that only the women whose experiences are outside of the bell curve tend to post. These discussions may not be an accurate depiction of what to expect.
