5 Critical Mistakes to Avoid During Your IVF Journey

Navigating the intricacies of IVF can be overwhelming, especially when you’re doing everything “right” yet facing unexpected hurdles. As the founder of Fertilista and a seasoned fertility coach, I’ve guided many women through the IVF process. Today, I want to share critical insights into the most common mistakes I’ve seen in my practice—mistakes that could hinder your journey toward motherhood.

1. Skipping Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI)

One of the first recommendations your reproductive endocrinologist might make is undergoing ICSI. It’s a common step that many might overlook due to cost or misunderstanding. If your physician recommends ICSI, you should seriously consider it. Skipping ICSI could lead to none of your eggs being fertilized, which is heartbreaking and costly both emotionally and financially. It’s a pivotal decision that significantly boosts your chances of success.

2. Overlooking Sperm Quality

Your partner’s sperm quality directly impacts your IVF success. A common pitfall is accepting mediocre sperm analysis results. For instance, a morphology rate of 4% might sound sufficient, but in reality, it’s far from optimal for natural conception. In IVF, they can find a few good ones to use with ICSI, but enhancing sperm quality through diet and lifestyle changes can increase this percentage significantly. Supplements like antioxidants, CoQ10, and fish oils can make a notable difference.

3. Ignoring Thyroid Health

Thyroid health is crucial yet often overlooked. Keeping an eye on your TSH levels is a piece of advice I give to ensure they’re within a healthy range before and during IVF. Fluctuating thyroid levels can profoundly affect your fertility and the outcome of the IVF cycle. Regular monitoring and adjustments with medications like Levothyroxine or Synthroid are essential for maintaining optimal thyroid function throughout your treatment.

4. Mismanaged Expectations

IVF is not a guaranteed solution, and the journey can be longer than anticipated. You want to hope for the best but prepare for a few cycles. The first cycle is often diagnostic, helping your doctor adjust treatments based on how you respond. Understanding this can help set realistic expectations and reduce emotional stress.

5. Continuing to Smoke or Vape

This might be one of the hardest habits to break, but it’s crucial. Smoking or vaping can severely impact egg and sperm quality. If it’s vaping nicotine or smoking cigarettes, it’s a huge no-no. Even vaping marijuana should be put aside. Many insurers won’t cover IVF costs if nicotine is detected in blood tests before the treatment, underscoring its significance.

These insights are tailored to help you navigate the complexities of the IVF process with greater awareness and preparedness. Avoiding these mistakes can enhance your chances of a successful outcome. Whether you’re about to start your IVF journey or are looking for ways to improve your current cycle, remember, informed decisions are powerful decisions.
