GET CONNECTED

If you’ve just returned from your OBGYN or reproductive endocrinologist after getting your Day 3 fertility labs done, you might be staring at those results thinking, “What does this all mean?” It’s easy to feel overwhelmed and fall down the Google rabbit hole, but don’t worry—I’ve got you covered.

Hi, I’m Nicole Stern, founder of Fertilista. I specialize in helping women understand their blood work so you can make sense of your fertility journey and take empowered steps toward that positive pregnancy test.

Why Day 3 Labs Are Important

Day 3 labs provide a snapshot of your hormone levels and overall reproductive health, offering valuable insights into your body’s ability to conceive. Understanding these results can help you and your doctor make informed decisions about your fertility journey, whether you’re exploring natural conception, IUI, or IVF.

Let’s break down each hormone that’s tested, what the normal ranges are, and what your results might be telling you about your fertility.

  1. Estradiol (Estrogen)

Estradiol, a form of estrogen, is critical during your cycle years when you’re trying to conceive. Typically, you’ll see normal ranges from 28 to 100 on your lab results. Here’s a quick breakdown:

  • Low Estradiol: If your levels are closer to the 28-40 range, it might mean your body is having a harder time producing estrogen.
  • High Estradiol: Levels around 100 could indicate a cyst, as mature cysts or follicles can give off 200 units of estradiol. Your doctor might order additional labs if this occurs.
  1. Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH)

FSH is another critical marker, telling your doctor about your body’s ability to produce follicles or eggs. A high FSH with low estradiol might suggest low ovarian reserve, indicating a reduced number of eggs. In such cases, you may want to consider options like IUI or IVF.

  1. Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH)

For those trying to conceive, an optimal TSH range is between 1 and 2. Normal levels for most women range from 0.4 to 4.2, but when it comes to fertility, tighter control is often needed:

  • Borderline TSH: If your levels are close to optimal, your doctor might not prescribe medication as TSH can fluctuate throughout the cycle.
  1. Anti-Mullerian Hormone (AMH)

Your AMH levels, often taking up to two weeks to get back, reflect your ovarian reserve. It’s a hormone given off by your follicles:

  • AMH Insight: Lower numbers could indicate fewer eggs, and your doctor should discuss this with you when results are available.
  1. Prolactin Levels

Elevated prolactin can be a concern for fertility, but the good news is it’s often easily regulated with medication. Elevated levels can impact ovulation, but with a quick prescription, your levels can be back to normal in no time.
