IVF is challenging enough without the added stress of a positive COVID-19 test. As the founder of Fertilista, I’ve seen how this pandemic has affected IVF cycles and the tough choices it brings. If you’re in the middle of an IVF journey and suddenly face a COVID diagnosis, this post offers the insights you need. I’ll share practical advice on what to do based on your stage in the process, how to have open conversations with your doctor, and how to prepare for a successful transfer after recovering from COVID.
Why Timing Matters in IVF During COVID-19
If you test positive for COVID-19 during your IVF treatment, the timing of your cycle is a critical factor in determining your next steps. It’s essential to “look at where you are at in the retrieval cycle” and reach out to your doctor. Depending on where you are, you may need to delay or adjust your plans to ensure the best outcome.
- During Suppression (Lupron or Birth Control Phase): If you’re in this initial phase, “call your doctor and actually push off the IVF cycle.” It’s disappointing, but “we have seen time and time again at Fertilista that a lot of times these cycles don’t go as we had hoped.” Waiting for a month or two can significantly boost your chances of success.
- Started Stimulation Medications: Even if you’ve already started your stems (stimulation medications), it’s still worth discussing with your doctor whether you can safely pause. “If you’re paying out of pocket, I really recommend that you call your doctor right away and discuss the pros and cons.”
- Too Far Along to Cancel: If you’re closer to retrieval and a delay isn’t an option, ask your doctor if you can convert your cycle from a fresh transfer to a frozen one. This approach involves freezing the eggs or embryos and waiting until full recovery before attempting the transfer.
Prepping Your Body for IVF Post-COVID Recovery
After recovering from COVID-19, it’s understandable to want to move forward with your IVF cycle as quickly as possible. But even if you only have “30 days, you can influence how COVID has affected your body” and set the stage for a successful outcome. Here’s what I recommend to my clients:
- Anti-Inflammatories: Whether you opt for over-the-counter options or choose the holistic route, reducing inflammation is paramount. I highly recommend a daily turmeric supplement of at least 500 mg.
- Incorporate Fish Oil: With 1200 mg of combined EPA and DHA, fish oil aids in reducing inflammation and thinning the blood.
- Include Antioxidants: Pomegranate juice or a homemade green drink can act as powerful antioxidants, supporting your body’s recovery journey.
What If You Can’t Delay Your Cycle?
I know that sometimes, postponing an IVF cycle just isn’t an option. Insurance requirements or other factors might require you to keep going, even when a COVID diagnosis complicates things. If that’s the case, don’t lose hope. You can still work with your doctor to improve your chances, and the steps you take to reduce inflammation can make a meaningful difference. The key is to stay informed, be proactive, and remain open to adjustments in your treatment plan.
