As a health-conscious woman navigating the complex journey of IVF, you might be wondering what the best exercise routine is for you. One of the most surprising mistakes that many of my clients make is engaging in too much high-intensity exercise, particularly using the exercise bike.

The Impact of High-Intensity Exercise on Fertility

When trying to conceive, maintaining a balanced and optimal body mass index (BMI) between 20 and 22 is crucial. However, the type of exercise you engage in is equally important. High-intensity exercises, such as cycling on an exercise bike, can negatively impact your fertility.

Here’s why: When you’re on your exercise bike, you start riding and pounding your perineum. This creates a lot of stasis and inflammation, which are not conducive to a fertile environment. Our bodies can either produce sex hormones or stress hormones. During high-intensity workouts, your body prioritizes producing stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol over estrogen. This hormonal imbalance can make it more challenging to conceive.

How High-Intensity Exercise Affects Men

The issue isn’t limited to women. When your partner gets on the exercise bike, wearing tight spandex, he’s essentially “cooking his balls.” This elevated temperature and stress are detrimental to sperm production. For couples trying to conceive, it’s vital that both partners engage in fertility-friendly exercise routines.

Recommended Low-Intensity Exercises for IVF Success

To create the best possible environment for conception, both naturally and through IVF, I recommend shifting to low-intensity exercises. Here are some fertility-friendly options:

Walking: A gentle, stress-free way to stay active

Yoga: Promotes relaxation and balance

Gentle Stretching: Keeps you flexible without overstraining your body

Weightlifting: Focus on moderate weights to maintain muscle tone without overexerting yourself

Avoid running, training for marathons, or participating in other high-intensity activities. Most importantly, stay off the exercise bike.

Giving It a Try: What Have You Got to Lose?

Many of my clients are initially resistant to giving up their high-intensity workouts, but I challenge you to set aside these exercises for two to three months. Answer this: What is it costing you? Trying this change might make a significant difference in your fertility journey. You might find that you have an easier time getting a positive pregnancy test by simply modifying your exercise routine.

If you’re trying to conceive, it’s essential to rethink your exercise habits. High-intensity workouts, especially using the exercise bike, can hinder your fertility. By opting for low-intensity exercises, you can create a more favorable environment for conception and increase your chances of IVF success.
