Struggling to figure out the best time for timed intercourse? You’re not alone! This is one of the most common questions I receive from women trying to conceive. Understanding the perfect timing can make all the difference in getting your big fat positive (BFP). Let’s explore how you can optimize your chances of pregnancy by timing intercourse just right.

Understanding Ovulation Timing

Many women wait until they get a positive result on their ovulation predictor kit (OPK) to have intercourse. However, this might be too late. Sperm can take up to three days to meet the egg, and you only have a 12 to 24-hour window during ovulation for fertilization. To maximize your chances, start having intercourse a few days before you expect to ovulate.

Err on the side of being overly cautious and having timed intercourse too early. If you typically ovulate around day 14, start having intercourse on day 10. Continue every other day—day 10, day 12, day 14.

Signs You’re Ovulating

If you’re unsure when you’re ovulating, pay attention to your body. Mid-cycle cramping or twinges and clear, stretchy cervical mucus are key indicators.

When you start to see cervical mucus, that’s go time. Even if your OPK shows a positive result later, begin intercourse when you notice these signs.

A Common Mistake

I often encounter women who believe they need advanced fertility treatments like IUI or IVF. When taking a closer look, the issue frequently lies in timing.

Just adjusting it a few days earlier can make a huge impact. If you don’t know your exact ovulation date, aim for intercourse every other day from day 10 to day 18.

You do not need to have timed intercourse every single day. It’s less effective, and also puts a lot of stress on your relationship.

A Quick Review:

  • Start a few days before expected ovulation.
  • Have intercourse every other day, beginning around day 10.
  • Look for signs like cramping and cervical mucus. That’s Go Time!
  • Don’t overdo it—every other day is sufficient.

Remember, err on the side of having timed intercourse too early and don’t stress about hitting the exact ovulation date. This approach can significantly increase your chances of getting a BFP.

The window of time is closed, job done. So, be proactive, but also be kind to yourself and your partner. You’re in this together.
