I know that you probably want to avoid putting medications such as Ativan into your body while trying to conceive. If you are at the point of having an HSG (hysterosalpingogram), I know that you have been trying to conceive for quite some time.
As an acupuncturist who wants you to be at optimal health while trying to conceive, I still absolutely advise you to take any medication prescribed by your RE to prepare for your HSG. That includes Ativan, Xanax, or over the counter Advil or Ibuprofen.
During your HSG, a dye contrast fluid is inserted into your vagina and uterus to check for any structural abnormalities. If you are nervous, stressed, or in discomfort during the procedure, you can actually cause your fallopian tubes to spasm and get a false positive of a blockage during your HSG. Not to mention that you might have increased pain during the procedure – this is not an optimal situation.
We want you and your RE to be able to find out if there is an underlying cause to your infertility struggle. We also want you to be comfortable during your procedure.
Whether or not you decide to take an anti-anxiety medication like Ativan before your HSG, make sure to recruit your husband, partner, or a friend to accompany you to the clinic. You may need them to drive or just be there for moral support. Take care and good luck – once you have your HSG, you are one step closer to conceiving.
